English C1 courses on Academic Writing/ Presentation + Discussion Skills

Developing Presentation and Discussion Skills
At the end of the course, you should be able to:
- plan a well-structured academic presentation,
- deliver presentations confidently,
- signpost your audience through the presentation,
- use your voice skillfully and effectively,
- involve your audience and handle questions efficiently.

Academic Writing and Advanced Grammar
The course objectives are to:
- explore different genres found in academic writing,
- locate patterns and tools to help you with your academic writing,
- gather field specific vocabulary and collocations,
- understand the specifics of English academic writing as opposed to German academic writing,
- review relevant grammar rules.
At the end of the course, you will be able to schedule an individual consultation session with the course convener.

Film Language
This course will provide you with the tools of film analysis, of “how to read a film“. We will learn the techniques and language to analyze, describe and criticize films (both documentary and feature films). After discussing film as an art, its story/plot, struc-ture, characters, setting, timing as well as the technology of image and sound, signs and syntax, we will turn to writing re-views and scripts.
Voraussetzung

Die Teilnahme an einem dieser Kurse setzt einen folgender Nachweise voraus: Leistungsnachweis eines Kurses IELP I oder II oder Vertiefungskurses II (B2.2) der Universität Osnabrück, entsprechender Nachweis eines anderen universitären Sprachenzentrums oder ein bestandener Eingangstest.

Die Eingangstest für dieses Wintersemester haben bereits stattgefunden.

Kosten: 20 Euro (2 SWS)

ECTS-Punkte
Für alle Kurse gibt es 3 ECTS-Punkte, diese sind z.B. im Professio-nalisierungsbereich oder im Studiengang „Sprachen in Europa“ anzurechnen.

Future Freshmen?

We also recommend you to participate in the block course Studienvorkurs Mathematik. The course requires active participation, but no previous knowledge. It is exclusively lectured in German. The first meeting of this course will be one week before our tutorials, more precisely on

October 10th, 2016 at 10 a.m. in building 66 (also called Reithalle) in rooms E33-34 (big lecture hall).

Some fellow CogScis will be around at the bus stops “Sedanplatz” (line 11) and "Hochschulen Westerberg" (line 21) to pick you up if you don't want to look for the lecture room yourself.

Canoe Trip 2016

Dear fellow CogScis,

As every year our fabulous Canuetour will also take place this year. Our
journey will start on the 4th of June in Rieste and end in Quakenbrück
the next day. In Bersenbrück we'll have a barbecue and spend the night.
So grap your drinks, tents and whatever you want to bring along and
prepare yourself for little sleep and a lot of fun.

The registration will be open on Friday 13th May at 10am and can be found here.

But hurry, there is just a limited amount of boats and you don't want to miss this!

Information for the new Freshmen (Winter 2015) [updated]

If you're starting studying Cognitive Science in October, you should definitely attend the freshmen week – you will get lots of important information on your studies, meet fellow students, and hopefully get all your questions answered. While attendance is not required, we strongly recommend it. Also, you don't need to worry about details like which courses you need to take or how to sign up for them right now – just be there and everything will be explained to you. :)

Freshmen week is from October 5th to 9th, and starts on October 5th at 10am. We will meet in the biology building's lecture hall (building 35, room 01).

Master Welcome SS2015

Dear fellow Coxi-Masters,

We are happy to welcome you in our colorful and friendly study program!

To get you started there will be an introductory session on Friday April 10th starting at 2 pm. We will talk about the study regulations, student life and of course share the newest gossip. ;) Additionally, Prof. Dr. Frank Jäkel - one of our lecturers - will give you a short welcome to the Institute. After that we are also planning some presentations on current study projects and research groups who will introduce themselves to give you a little insight into the programm.
For some socializing, be prepared for a traditional evening program that will finish your transformation to a full-scale Coxi!

The details in short - on Friday 10th...
If you want to, join in for a collective lunch at the Westerberg Mensa at 12:30 pm. Just look out for the friendly folks with a sign - that will be us.
The introduction itself will start at 2 pm in room E15, building 69 - see the attached link for some orientation
Plan in approx. 2 - 3 hours of time.

Tutorial for new Master students WS2014/15

Dear Master-freshmen!

There is going to be an introductory tutorial especially for you, where we explain the simple formal- and the intricate social-implications of studying coxi.;) This will cover a lot of stuff including the study regulations, how to find and book courses and where to socialize with your fellow students.

The tutorial will take place on Tuesday, 7.10 from 2pm till 4pm in room 69/E23 (campus Westerberg).
