As you might have recognised the X-Mas Party will be next week. There are still helpers needed, so that we all can have a great party together. So please participate!
Here the open positions needed (please send your response to the person in the brackets):

Buffet: akaiser
As in the last years we need YOU to bring a selfmade dessert. Please let your fellow students benefit from your dessert-making-skills! We also need people who help setting up the buffet, some who help preparing the snacks, etc.

Setup and Clearing: rcosta
If you want to help setting up our awesome party, or if you’re a party animal and usually stay till the last dance, help clearing up in the
end.

Program: kschaefer
If you want to perform an act, sing a song, perform a poem, or just help setting up the different sets.
-> We still urgently search for some acts!!!

Deko: aschwitteck
If you want to help setting up the decoration or are full of awesome ideas to make the appearance of the hall unique.

Organisation of the box-office: jubrehm
Still some people needed to take shifts at the evening entrance.

TL;DR: Get important information wherever you want: Mail, FS-Page, Twitter, Facebook. Communicate in the medium you want (check the links in the list below).

We’ve recently discussed how to handle reoccuring attempts by students to get any information concerning their studies via social media only. Problems are obvious: Wrong information can be given (you don’t know how reliable the source is), outdated information can be given or (even worse) up-to-date info can only be found in social media.

We decided that in terms of Active Student Body -> Students communication we cannot practically enforce the usage of any medium. With this concept and implementation we aim for automatic synchronisation of information between all mediums we currently use. This includes Twitter, Facebook, FS-Page/Blog and the mailinglist.

In the following I will briefly describe the changes for each medium:

  • FS-Landing Page: This is the page you get when accessing fachschaft.cogsci.uos.de – All posts, tweets and blogs shall be mirrored to this page.
  • Mailinglist: You get kind of a newsletter each couple of days including all info announced via social media / blog. (does not work yet, see below)
  • Blog: The blog will run solely as an input medium. Content will be integrated into the FS-Landing Page and links are sent to Facebook as well as Twitter (the latter does not work yet). No real need to check seperately.
  • Twitter: Currently two Twitter accounts are running: @CogSciUOS (run by the institute) and @CogSciMentoring (run by the mentoring). Tweets are mirrored to Facebook and FS-Landing Page.
  • Facebook: A new Facebook Page was created, titled CogSciOS Students. Via this page you will receive any important information and may ask about study-related issues. The page is moderated (by the mentoring and students actively engaged in the student body), all spam will be deleted. Additionally there is one Facebook Group where you’re free to organize unofficial happenings, discuss the latest fashion trends and post the cutest cat videos out there. The group will be unmoderated (expect inappropriate posts of course).

Our efforts are supposed to channel the flow of information mainly for responsible persons to always know where the info can be found and be able check it’s up-to-dateness. Besides students are supposed to receive information wherever they want and communicate in the medium they want. If any part of such a conversation is considered to be important, it will be reposted to all mediums. Elaborated documentation of this concept will follow in TRAC.

Since the concept was not accepted without individual criticism we are starting off the system as a test run and will reflect on it on one of the upcoming FS-mettings. I feel obliged to stress that we do not want to force someone to use a medium he/she does not want to, but exactly the opposite. The concept is not perfect of course. There is no such thing. That’s why criticism, ideas and general comments are always welcome.

socialmediaWorks, Will work soon, automatic function will require some time

I want to inform you about the annual T-Shirt contest. By now, there was no design submitted. So, it would be nice to get some designs from the freshmen.

As every year you’re encouraged to get your hands on your favourite graphic art software and design this years t-shirt. Please send your contributions to me (janhmeyer@uos.de) until the 13th of November. The voting will start soon after that date. Some inspiration and information can be found here:
http://fachschaft.cogsci.uni-osnabrueck.de/t-shirt

As every year there are some guidelines on what can be printed:

  • Try to avoid gradients (Verläufe), that includes most pencil-hatchings (Schraffuren) for shadows, try to use hard shadows instead
  • The printers at Burg Lutter cannot print more than 4 colours – try to use colours not only once, but for multiple different areas
  • Try to keep things simple and design your artwork only with black and white. This way it looks good on many different t-shirts and it is much easier and cheaper to print
  • Vector-graphics are perfect, if you have no clue about what a vector-graphic is: Choose a high resolution (about 300 dpi are enough)
  • If you are a great pencil artist but do not have a clue with computers scan your work and send it to me, I will try to find a solution
  • If you have a great idea you think is worth sharing, roughly sketch a drawing and send it to me, too!

If you have any questions regarding the contest, just drop me a line.
I’m looking forward to many great artworks.

Be creative!
